Since 2010, one 501(c)(3) nonprofit has let donors choose the cause a donated vehicle supports — veterans, children's wishes or animal rescue.

Car Donation Foundation, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit behind Vehicles For Veterans, Wheels For Wishes and Animal Car Donation, has surpassed $200 million in lifetime vehicle donations — one of the largest milestones reached by any vehicle donation program in the country. Since 2010, the organization has turned donated cars, trucks, boats and motorcycles into funding for veterans, children facing critical illness and animals in need of rescue, letting donors choose the program that matches the cause they care about most.

Car Donation Foundation Two Hundred Million Dollar Milestone

"Reaching a $200 million donation milestone carries even more meaning once you break it back down into cars," said Loren Dorshow, Executive Director of Car Donation Foundation. "Every one of those vehicles started as somebody's decision to hand over their keys instead of selling to a stranger or a junkyard. That decision, multiplied a couple hundred thousand times, is how you get here."

Whichever program a donor chooses, the same in-house team handles the vehicle — from everyday cars to classic and collector vehicles, boats and RVs — working to bring the greatest possible return at auction, since a higher sale price means more reaching the cause the donor selected.

Those two-hundred million in proceeds reach charities in every part of the country.

Through Vehicles For Veterans, proceeds benefit a national network of veterans organizations including Fisher House Foundation, Homes For Our Troops, Operation Homefront and Folds of Honor. That network also includes the Gary Sinise Foundation, Oscar Mike Foundation, K9s For Warriors, Hope For The Warriors, Semper Fi & America's Fund, Team Red, White & Blue and Warrior Bonfire Program.

Donors who want to support America's veterans can give through Vehicles For Veterans, which directs proceeds to a national network of veterans charities providing housing assistance, medical and mental health care, adaptive equipment, service dogs, and more. More about the program is available at:

Through Wheels For Wishes, donations support 47 Make-A-Wish® chapters nationwide, from Alabama and Arizona to Wisconsin and Wyoming. Proceeds from each donated vehicle benefit the chapter nearest the donor, helping grant wishes for children in their own community.

Donors who want to support children facing critical illness can give through Wheels For Wishes, which primarily benefits Make-A-Wish and, in some select areas, other children's wish and hospital charities. More about the program is available at:

Through Animal Car Donation, the newest of the three programs, proceeds support rescues including Muttville Senior Dog Rescue in San Francisco, The Bond Between in Minnetonka, Minnesota, Bitty Kitty Brigade in the Twin Cities and Animal Haven in New York City.

Donors who want to support animals in need can give through Animal Car Donation, which directs proceeds to a network of animal rescue organizations providing shelter, veterinary care, foster homes and adoption. More about the program is available at:

"What ties these programs together is that they all start with the same simple act — someone deciding a car is worth more as a donation than a sale," said Loren Dorshow, Executive Director of Car Donation Foundation. "For a veteran, that might mean a service dog or help with rent during a hard stretch. For a child, a life-changing wish that gives them something to look forward to. For an animal, veterinary care that gets them to their forever home. Different causes, same starting point."

Donors give once, and Car Donation Foundation handles the rest: free pickup anywhere in the country, title paperwork and the sale of the vehicle, with proceeds going toward the cause the donor selected.
